If you’ve heard bible stories growing up like I did, then you remember the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho. What kid doesn’t like this one? And do you remember acting it out, marching around the city, blowing the ram’s horn, and shouting at the top of your lungs? And the walls came tumbling down! I remember doing this as a child.
“God spoke to Joshua, Look sharp now. I’ve already given Jericho to you, along with its king and its crack troops. Here’s what you are to do: March around the city, all your soldiers. Circle the city once. Repeat this for six days. Have seven priests carry seven ram’s horn trumpets in front of the Chest. On the seventh day march around the city seven times, the priests blowing away on the trumpets. And then, a long blast on the ram’s horn – when you hear that, all the people are to shout at the top of their lungs. The city wall will collapse at once. All the people are to enter, every man straight on in.” Joshua 6:2-5 MSG
Clearly, God spoke to Joshua…no doubt about it. You know how I love The Message version of the bible. And I love when God told Joshua, “Look sharp now.”
Israel had sinned. They broke the covenant that God had commanded. Jericho was under a “holy curse” they weren’t to covet or take anything that was cursed, in doing so, it would endanger the camp of Israel. Joshua 6:18-19 MSG
But someone had sticky fingers, and “took some of the cursed things. God became angry with the people of Israel.” Joshua 7:1 MSG
God had a word for Joshua: “Get up. Why are you groveling? Israel has sinned….The people of Israel can no longer look their enemies in the eye – they themselves are plunder. I can’t continue with you if you don’t rid yourself of the cursed things.” Joshua 7:10,12 MSG
Joshua in fact took care of this situation, but, not without having hesitation for the next action God had called him to do.
“God said to Joshua, “Don’t be timid and don’t so much as hesitate. Take all your soldiers with you and go back to Ai. (Joshua had sent men to “spy” out Ai right after Israel had sinned in taking the plunder under the holy curse and some of Joshua’s men had lost their lives) I have turned the king of Ai over to you – his people, his city, and his land. “Do to Ai and its king what you did to Jericho and its king. Only this time you may plunder its stuff and cattle to your hearts content.” Joshua 8:1-2 MSG
Joshua and all his soldiers got ready to march on Ai.
These were the words that Joshua had for his soldiers: “Look sharp now.” Just what God had told Joshua. And listen to this part, I love this…”God, your God, will hand it to you on a platter. Once you have the city, burn it down. God says it, you do it. Go to it. I’ve given you your orders.” Joshua 8:3,8 MSG
God says it, you do it. Go to it.
What has God asked you to do? We can rest with this knowledge. The same God that was with Joshua is the very same God who is with us today! He hasn’t changed and he never will. Joshua’s strength and courage can be the same for us! Whatever God has asked us to do remember this dear friend with strength and courage as Joshua had:
God says it, you do it. Go to it!
