We all fall into the “comparison ~ trap” from time to time. It’s not a pretty place to land either. I’ve fallen many times. We’ve all been there. Whatever time you put into comparing yourself to others can be a part-time or full-time job. A job that will exhaust you beyond belief and with no benefits!
When we have our eyes and heart set on Jesus, we shouldn’t care what other people think of us, but we do. I have always been one to worry about what people think of me. God is healing me from this particular hang-up that I have.
Oh, I slip back into worrying from time to time. I’ve realized (with God’s help) we flatter ourselves if we think people are sitting around thinking and worrying about our next moves or motives. And even if they are, who cares!
I like the way Paul in the New Testament saw things…
“It matters very little to me what you think of me, even less where I rank in popular opinion. I don’t even rank myself. comparisons in these matters are pointless.” Paul was not going to allow himself to fall into a “comparison ~ trap”. We all need to be more like him.
Our society sets us up to automatically compare ourselves with each other. That’s the way it’s always been, and unfortunately will always be.
“How much time he gains who does not look to see what his neighbour says or does or thinks, but only at what he does himself, to make it just and holy.”
What a miserable way of life, comparing yourself to another. You’ll have to admit, when you do it, in your mind you never measure up to that other person. You’re like a hamster in that little wheel that’s going nowhere! Those little hamsters are so cute and funny spinning away, oblivious to the life around them. But unless you live in a box with cedar shavings, your life is not meant to be in a hamster’s wheel!
“Comparison is the death of joy.”
When God’s knows our hearts, nothing else should matter!
“When the Lord makes it clear you’re to follow Him in this new direction, focus fully on Him and refuse to be distracted by comparisons with others.”
Charles R. Swindoll
“Who do you know that really knows you, knows your heart? And even if they did, is there anything they would discover in you that you could take credit for? Isn’t everything you are sheer gifts from God? So what’s the point of all this comparing and competing? You already have more access to God than you can handle…you’re sitting on top of the world – at least God’s world.” 1 Corinthians 4: 3,7-8 MSG
We can be sitting on top of the world, or spinning inside a hamster’s wheel!
