Anatomy Of A Tightrope Walker

ImageIt’s hard for me to focus on three different things at once….unless I’m under a tent at the circus!  Then it’s a requirement for those “hard-to-focus” kind of folks to lay all that aside and just somehow do it.

You’re squeezed into a seat shoulder to shoulder with people you don’t even know from Adam’s house cat, eating cotton candy, popcorn and of course peanuts! The smell of sawdust, and animals go together like Jenny’s analogy of “carrots & peas” in Forest Gump.

Who doesn’t love the circus!

I can remember going to a circus once and watching the “Tightrope Walker” and being so fascinated by this particularly death-defying act!  I mean, who wouldn’t be?  It’s one of those things that ~ it’s too scary to watch, yet you’re afraid not to!

Tightrope walking (or funambulism) is the art of walking along a thin wire or rope usually at a great height.  And according to Wikipedia, there are various forms of this.

Tightwire is the art of maintaining balance while walking along a tensioned wire between two points.  (remember this reference!)  There’s also Highwire, Slackwire, Skywalk, Slackling and Freestyle Slackling.

There has to be that element of “thrill” for the tightrope walker.  They train many hours for this one particular moment in time to share with an audience who is cheering them on, holding breaths, and hearts beating for them.

They step out on the wire, eyes and mind focused from reaching one side to the other safely…depending on the hope that the wire is tightly tied on both ends!

I can’t help but envision a tightrope walker when I read this verse that Paul has shared with us in Colossians 1:5  ” The lines of purpose in your lives never grow slack, tightly tied as they are to your future in heaven, kept taut by hope.”

Close your eyes with me for a moment and imagine this beautiful picture…..You are that “Tightrope Walker.”   Your purpose in life (in Christ) never grows slack.  Your Papa God has tied those lines of purpose tight and secure on both ends.  He will help you maintain balance while you walk along this line of purpose.  When you step out on the wire, you experience that element of thrill, because you know that the wire (line of purpose) will lead you right to heaven one day!  You are confident and secure in knowing this – it’s tied on either end by hope!  The hope and promise of heaven one day!

David must have been a “Tightrope Walker.”

“For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.”  Psalm 71:5 ESV

“With both feet planted on love, (step out on your line of purpose)  you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love.  Reach out and experience the breadth! (remember..no need to worry, that line is tied tight!)  Test its length! (eyes and mind focused straight ahead)   Plumb the depths! (God’s net of love will catch you) Rise to the heights! (as in high wire walking) Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.”  Ephesians 3:17-19 MSG

The true art of maintaining balance while walking along a tensioned wire between two points, is knowing who tied that wire on both ends, and who holds your hand while you make that walk!
