We all have sleepless nights. Some more than others. When I have them, I usually wake up at the same stinking time every night, or should I say morning! 4:00 am to be exact! I get up at 5:00 am for goodness sakes! And don’t you just love waking up every hour on the hour. Good grief. What’s wrong with me!

I’m sure that I am not the only one who does this at night. It’s just so frustrating when I lie there knowing I have a full day at work ahead of me!

Oh…and let’s not forget Verdell our Brussels Griffon, scratching, snorting and snoring away, making his little hairy body indention on the memory foam! I love our Verdell, he was to be “my” dog but guess who he loves more?

I guess I’m a light female sleeper whose hormones are getting in the way of a good nights sleep! Don’t tell my husband, but occasionally I crack the window while the fan is oscillating on medium. (Sometimes in 30 degree weather-our secret ok?)

It looks as though David had some sleepless nights of his own.

“If I’m sleepless at midnight, I spend the hours in grateful reflection. Because you’ve always stood up for me.” Psalm 63:6-7 MSG

Can’t you see David tossing about trying to get some sleep. Since he couldn’t reach for a Tylenol PM, he starts reflecting on God’s goodness.

“Thank you God for watching over me and my sheep when I was a boy” – “Thank you for helping me face the giant that day, you were truly there with me when I stood before him with nothing but a slingshot and a few
stones” – “Thank you for protecting me from Saul” – “Thank you for Jonathan, you provided a best friend for me” – “Thank you for your forgiveness when I’ve messed up!”

David’s restless nights turned into thanksgiving and praise as he recounted God’s goodness to him.

In the movie “White Christmas” Bing Crosby sings a song toward the end that goes like this…”When I’m worried and I can’t sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep, I fall asleep counting my blessings.”

Recounting God’s goodness to us and counting our blessings may just be the much needed rest we’ve been searching for.

The Author

Hey there....so glad you dropped by! My name is Elizabeth Maxwell, but everyone knows me as "Beth." I am the wife to Kevin Maxwell of 35 years. We have 3 grown sons, one daughter-in-law, and our adopted daughter Maria. God laid on our hearts to experience the adoption journey in 2000. Our sweet Maria is special needs and from Bulgaria. God has truly been with us every step of the way on our journey with her. I live in the beautiful foothills state of Tennessee. I love my beautiful Tennessee home. From the foothills to the whippoorwills, God's beauty shines forth here. I love to laugh often. I enjoy old movies, reading books, and I love to sing southern gospel songs, especially the ones with a little bit of country. I love my sweet little job, working with Kindergartners...and yes "kids do say the darndest things!" I am encouraged by God's word and I love to dig into it. I am by no means a scholarly expert, but I do delight in His encouragement for me. I am a friend of God...after all, God's got my back! And not just my back - "He goes before me." (Deuteronomy 31:8) "He's right beside me." (Hebrews 13:5) and, "He surrounds me on every side." (Psalm 125:2) These verses remind me that I am not alone while traveling on this "Journey Called Life!" Won't you travel with me? While on this journey, I may share a recipe, a book, or even a movie or song that I love....but most of all I want to share God's word with you. My prayer is that you will be encouraged, and know that you are not alone on this journey called life!
